As we celebrate Independence Day, let us remember that all freedom comes as a result of great sacrifice and that we must be willing to sacrifice if we are to attain and preserve this freedom.  Many people have the mistaken impression that freedom means that I can do whatever I want, when I want, and how I want.  This is why there is so much trouble and chaos in the world.

God given freedom, which is the freedom envisioned by the Declaration of Independence, is our empowerment to respect one another’s rights and to assist each other in our tasks of fulfilling God’s plan for our lives.  When this mutual respect and assistance become a reality, the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness follow as a natural result.
Picnics, fireworks, and games will be our chief occupations on this day.  But at Mass today and for a few moments today, let’s stop and thank God for the freedoms and rights we have as citizens of the United States of America.  Let’s not forget the men and women fighting for freedom in trouble spots of the world but ask God to shield them under the proction of his mightly arm that shatters the weapons of war and lead us all to accept the gentle rule of the King of Peace.

May your Independence Day be happy!
