The usual Gospel reading for the Mass of Thanksgiving Day is the story of the Ten Lepers. All ten were healed, but only one returned to thank Jesus for his healing. The important lesson in this story is that, because we are gifted in so many ways by the good God, we run the danger of expending so much energy enjoying the gifts, we sometimes forget to thank the giver.
As parents and teachers, we make every effort to teach our children manners - to be polite by saying "please" and "thank you." Let us avoid undoing our lessons by bad example. Thanksgiving Day is an important occasion to stop and thank the giver of every benefit we enjoy. As we receive or visit family and friends, feast on a delicious dinner and watch the numerous football games on TV, remember to make and take time to thank God for his generosity which is without limit. Come to Mass at 9:00 on Thanksgiving Day. Here is something concrete we can do to thank God for all his blessings.
Speaking of blessings, what a blessing it was to receive so many personal visits, Mass Enrollments, Novenas, cards and gifts as I continue to recover from my accident on September 9. You have lightened many a long day by your pleasant thoughts and prayers. They have been buoying me up every step of the way. Many, many thanks for all your kindness.
Please accept my prayerful best wishes for a very blessed and happy Thanksgiving day and holiday weekend. May the Good Lord bless your hearts and homes with his love and grace.
