March 10, 2024

With the Fourth Sunday in Lent, we reach the half-way point in this holy season. It's often a good idea when we reach a half-way mark to stop and take a look at where we have been, what progress we have made, and where we are going. We can apply this especially the Lenten resolutions we have made prior to Ash Wednesday. How have I been keeping up with the Lenten plans I've made? Am I praying more? Going to the Way of the Cross on Wednesday evenings? Am I being a little less extravagant in my standard of living? Am I sharing what I have with those less fortunate than I? Am I striving to grow in charity? To be more faithful to my baptismal covenant as I journey with the Elect and those preparing for the Easter Sacraments? Have I made my Easter Duty? (Confession and Communion from the First Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday)

For those of us who have slipped over the past several weeks, there is still time to get back on track. For those of us who are struggling to keep our resolutions, the Church through the Liturgy encourages us not to give up but to stay the course. The Liturgy begins with the words "Be glad" (laetare). Rose vestments may be used instead of the normal violet with its somber hues. Flowers may also adorn the altar for today.

At this time our thoughts should be directed to how we will celebrate Holy Week. Pay attention to the envelope packets you have received in the mail as well as the bulletin for the times of the various services. Don't let this year pass you by without entering as deeply as you can into the mysteries of Our Redemption. This is how Easter becomes the special day it is supposed to be.
